Who This Package Is For

Families residing in Indiana & Florida (If you do not live in these states, please reach out by completing our Contact Form)

This package is designed for parents who have had ongoing concerns about their child's development, perhaps due to a previous diagnosis or suspected diagnosis. Or maybe you have received services in the past and you’d like to switch to telehealth services.

What’s Included In This Package

  • Your child will complete an assessment administered by the occupational therapist during the initial evaluation. The chosen assessment will be based on their individualized needs. The three assessments most commonly used at OT House Telehealth include The Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (BEERY VMI), The Sensory Profile 2, and The Developmental Profile 4.

  • After your child completes the assessment during the initial evaluation, parents will receive a digital detailed report based on the results. This report will offer valuable insights into your child's strengths, challenges, and specific needs. With this information in hand, parents can better understand their child's development and advocate for their child’s needs while collaborating with other professionals involved in their care.

  • During the evaluation, I'll check if your child's automatic “baby” reflexes are still active. These reflexes should fade away as they grow, but sometimes they don't. If we find any, don't worry! We'll work on them in our follow-up visits and include activities in the home exercise program (see below). These reflexes are like baby instincts and if they don’t fade away naturally they can affect things like sitting still, paying attention, sensory processing, motor coordination, writing neatly as they get older, etc. By helping your child with these reflexes, we can make everyday activities easier and more fun for them.

  • Through telehealth, I have the opportunity to observe your child engaging in everyday tasks within the familiarity of their home environment. This unique perspective allows me to see how they might navigate home-based and school-based activities, as well as their social interactions. By conducting this part of the evaluation in this way, I can gain deeper insights into your child's strengths and any challenges they may encounter in their natural surroundings. Additionally, telehealth provides the convenience of real-time collaboration with you, the parent, allowing us to discuss your child's unique strengths and any concerns you may have without the need to travel to a clinic. This collaborative approach ensures that we can tailor our therapy precisely to your child's needs, fostering optimal progress and development.

  • For many of the children we work with, a sensory diet can be immensely beneficial. By incorporating sensory activities into their daily routines, we can help manage behaviors and support your child in maintaining a regulated nervous system. This, in turn, enhances their ability to focus and engage in everyday activities with increased enjoyment and attentiveness. You will receive a printable digital copy of their individualized sensory diet. During the complimentary 30-minute follow-up sessions, we'll discuss and fine-tune the sensory diet to best meet your child's individual needs, ensuring they receive optimal support for their development and well-being.

  • After the evaluation, your child will receive a personalized home exercise program designed just for them, based on what we've learned about their needs. This program may include activities like primitive reflex integration, range of motion exercises, core strengthening, and motor skills practice. You'll get a printable digital copy of the home exercise program. During our complementary follow-up visits, we'll go over the program together, making sure it's working well for your child and make any revisions needed to keep them on track.

  • Included in the comprehensive evaluation package are three 30-minute follow-up sessions dedicated to addressing your child's specific, individualized needs. These follow-up sessions serve as checkpoints to ensure your child remains on the path to progress. The frequency of these follow-up sessions will be recommended based on the therapist's suggestions, ensuring that your child receives the optimal level of support and guidance. Should you find the need for further support beyond the three complimentary sessions included in this package, additional sessions are available for $50/30 minutes or $100/60 minutes. With this comprehensive evaluation package, we believe that you will feel confident and empowered by the progress achieved. However, we are more than happy to continue supporting you on this journey as desired.

The Importance of Early Identification and Intervention

Sensory Diet, Primitive Reflexes, & Sensory Integration — How Does It All Work?

As a pediatric occupational therapist, I work diligently to uncover the underlying factors contributing to a child's sensory challenges. These factors, often less apparent or easily observable, are carefully examined and understood with thorough assessment and collaboration with caregivers. With this insight, I create personalized treatment plans that target these fundamental factors. These treatment plans may include a sensory diet to regulate sensory input, sensory integration therapy to refine sensory processing skills, and primitive reflex integration therapy to address primitive reflexes impacting both motor and sensory development. By addressing these underlying factors, I aim to empower children and their families to navigate their sensory experiences more effectively to engage more fully in daily activities.

Example Sensory Diet

Morning Routine:

  1. Heavy Work Activities:

Engage in activities that provide deep pressure input, such as pushing or pulling a weighted cart filled with books or toys for 5-10 minutes.

  2. Fidget Break:

Use a fidget tool, such as a stress ball or textured fabric, for 5-10 minutes to promote focus and tactile input.

School Hours:

  1. Alerting Activities:

Incorporate short bursts of alerting activities like jumping on a mini-trampoline or doing quick chair push-ups to help maintain attention and arousal levels.

  2. Sensory Breaks:

Schedule sensory breaks throughout the day, involving activities like swinging, spinning, or rocking to support self-regulation.

Primitive Reflex Integration: The Secret That You Are Finally Hearing About!

Retained primitive reflexes can disrupt a child's sensory processing system by interfering with the integration of sensory information and hindering their ability to regulate responses to stimuli effectively. During childhood, several primitive reflexes emerge as a part of typical development, and they are expected to integrate as a child grows. Primitive reflexes are automatic, stereotypical movements that serve specific functions in early infancy. The integration of primitive reflexes lays the foundation for the acquisition of advanced motor skills, refines sensory processing capabilities, and fosters enhanced cognitive processing in children.

Sensory Integration

Occupational therapists look to sensory integration therapy as a vital intervention to address sensory processing challenges in children. This therapy entails structured occupational therapy treatment sessions that incorporate a diverse array of sensory experiences tailored to the individual child's needs and preferences. The overarching goal is to assist children in integrating and processing sensory information more effectively, thereby promoting improved self-regulation and functional performance in daily activities.
